DIGITECH: IMPACT

A core part of BBK’s vision is that Richmond will be a hub for digital technology where all adults and youth in Richmond access and use technology to engage with the world and have equitable opportunities to become innovators in technology.

BBK is going beyond a focus on internet access to supporting families to acquire the literacies necessary to use technology as a tool for social, educational, and economic advancement. With this work, we are attempting to increase the number of Richmond youth and adults pursuing STEM careers thus ensuring that this untapped talent pool can increase innovation and discovery in the field. Our interest in building these skills is not solely about turning every child into a software engineer; we are also committed to making every Richmond child STEM literate, proficient at solving problems and able to spin a new, more inclusive technological age.

Techquity: A core part of BBK’s vision is that Central Richmond will be a hub for digital technology where all adults and youth in Richmond access and use technology to engage with the world and have equitable opportunities to become innovators in technology.  BBK hoste free events where families receive: a refurbished desktop computer, training on how to use the computer and support signing on to low-cost broadband service. Over the course of the year, participants meet African American and Latino mentors currently in STEM careers and have the opportunity to visit and tour the facilities of STEM organizations located in the Bay Area.

YOUTH CODING & STEM CLUB: Runs over 22 weeks, 3 sessions in the program year, 2 days per week at BBK. We have fun activities for participants with ZERO computer science experience and activities that introduce college-level concepts. Participants explore fundamental computer science concepts through unplugged activities, animation and video game challenges using Scratch and Javascript.

STEM curriculum developed by Techbridge covers mechanical engineering, chemical engineering and design challenges.

Summer Minecraft Camp: Runs for 6 weeks, 4 days per week at the City of Richmond computer lab. Campers learn beginner/intermediate coding, Redstone Engineering, and game design, to build and explore, strategize, connect with others, set goals, and plan for upcoming challenges.

We partner with Central Richmond families so that they may strengthen their ability to support their children, family and community.
